    The CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice is an entry-level qualification in human resources (HR) and learning and development (L&D).

    The qualification is accredited by the CIPD, the professional body for HR and L&D professionals. This means that it is recognized by employers and other organizations as a valuable qualification.

    The qualification comprises four core units, each assessed independently.

    Unit 1 – Business, Culture and Change in Context

    This unit examines how external influences, digital developments, and commercial forces shape the environment in which organisations operate. It explores the relationship between people’s behaviour and organisational culture, and the role of HR in supporting effective change management.

    Learning Outcomes:

    • Understand the business environment in which the people profession operates, including the key issues that affect it
    • Understand how people’s behaviour in the workplace affects and shapes culture

    Unit 2 – Principles of Analytics

    This unit introduces the use of data and evidence to inform HR decision-making and improve working practices. It covers how people professionals apply both straightforward and more complex analytical thinking to create value within organisations.

    Learning Outcomes:

    • Understand how evidence-based practice informs organisational measures and outcomes
    • Explain the different types of data measurements that professionals use
    • Know how creating value benefits employees, customers, and wider stakeholders

    Unit 3 – Core Behaviours for People Professionals

    This unit focuses on the professional values, ethical standards, and behaviours expected of those working in HR and L&D. It examines how consistent professional conduct promotes inclusivity, respect, and integrity across a range of workplace situations.

    • Understand insightful approaches to supporting and maintaining ethics and professional practice

    Unit 4 – Essentials of People Practice

    This unit covers the core functions of people practice, from the full employee lifecycle through to the policies, regulations, and legislation that govern employment. It explores key HR disciplines including recruitment, talent management, reward, and learning and development, giving learners the applied skills to work confidently in a people practice setting.

  • Entry Requirements

    No previous HR experience is required. You should be comfortable reading and writing in English, and have access to a laptop or computer with internet access.


    If English is not your first language, the following are recommended (though not mandatory):

    • IELTS: 5.5 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each category
    • TOEFL: 71 overall, with a minimum of 17 in each category
    • Cambridge: Grade C or above

    How long does the CIPD Level 3 take to complete? Most learners complete the course in 7–9 months on average. You are given 12 months of access, providing plenty of flexibility to work at your own pace.


    Are there any exams? No. The course is fully assessment-based. You will complete four written assignments — one per unit — with up to three attempts available for each.


    Do I need CIPD membership? Yes. CIPD Student Membership is required for your assignments to be submitted and marked. This is a mandatory CIPD requirement and is paid separately to CIPD. Please check the CIPD website for the current membership fee before enrolling.


    Can I study while working full-time? Yes. The course is designed to be studied flexibly alongside full-time work. Most learners dedicate around 6–8 hours per week to their studies.


    What qualification will I receive? Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice and become eligible for CIPD Foundation Membership, allowing you to use the designation ‘Foundation CIPD’ after your name.
