Video Interview Tips

Video Interview Tips

Video interviews can understandably be challenging for job seekers because video chat platforms – FaceTime, Google Hangouts, Zoom, Skype, etc.-have changed the way employers connect with job candidates. If you’re among the many people who are camera shy, it’s time to take steps to fix that and set yourself up for success.

Check Your Connection

  • For a clear HD video connection, you need at least 1 Mbps (Megabites per second).
  • Switching from Wi-Fi to wired Ethernet connection may improve your Internet speed.
  • Make sure your device is fully charged and connected to an outlet to avoid an outage
  • Check the audio. You may need to wear headphones if your computer has a lousy speaker system or buy an external microphone
  • Look at the camera. Familiarize yourself with the video platform.

Have a Plan If Things Go Haywire

  • Technology just fails some times, regardless of how many times you checked your Internet connection.
  • So, before you begin a video interview, provide the interviewer with a phone number where you can be reached if there are any technical difficulties.

Choose the Right Setting

  • Find a quiet, private, and well-lit place to do the interview-make sure to avoid coffee shops and other communal spaces where you can’t control the background noise.
  • Lighting is also important. Sit opposite an open window to maximize natural light.

Dress the Part

  • For a video interview, wear the same professional clothes as you would for an in-person interview.
  • Avoid plaid or stripes, as they can be distracting on camera
  • Read up on the company’s dress code, and be prepared to change accordingly.

Mind Your Body Language

  • Maintaining good eye contact is crucial during any job interview, but it is especially important during video interviews.

Don’t Rely Too Heavily on Notes

  • Have a copy of your resume nearby, just as you would during an in-person interview.

Make a Great First Impression

  • Have smart answers at the ready
  • Learn how to answer questions in such a way that your skills and value shine through
